| | | | BMX Helmet Buying Guide | | Every BMX rider needs a proper helmet. BMX riders typically use skateboard-style helmets, both full-face and open face. A BMX helmet differs from other bike helmets because of the physical "trick" aspect of the sport and BMX riders need a helmet designed to withstand multiple impacts because crashes are second nature for both notices and advanced BMX riders. • The two main types of BMX helmets: Full-face BMX helmets and open face helmets. The full face helmet should be bought if you are just getting into BMX racing. On the other hand, the open helmet is bought when riding in the park or pool. A full-face helmet provides protection to the top, sides, and back of your head. The full face helmet provides more protection as compared to open helmet but it is also much heavier and more restrictive because of its larger size and heavier weight.
• After choosing the type of BMX helmet you want, make sure you have a proper fit. A helmet is useless and completely ineffective if it does not fit. A BMX helmet should not be so tight as to impede air circulation. In the beginning, it should be a little tighter than required. Just like with shoes, for instance, the helmet will loosen with continued use as it "packs out".
• The strap should never be too loose or too tight. If you do go down, a loose strap means your helmet is more likely to bounce or fall off. Consequently, a strap that is too tight can cause discomfort and impede air circulation. A too-tight strap can also snap if there is too much pressure applied. Decide what feels both comfortable and secure when tightening your BMX helmet strap, using how you feel and how easily it moves around on your head as a gauge.
• As with any helmet, double check both the shell and interior structure for strength and durability. Always do a full check of the entire helmet before you wear it, checking for cracks, dents and other flaws (The minor scratch excluded — you are BMX racing!) You should check quality certifications and browse online BMX message boards and BMX magazines to see the latest helmets and customer ratings before shopping.
